Itinerary
Cape Sounion, one of the most popular historical destination in Athens.
- Starting Points: Greece/Athens
- Route 1 Cape Sounion
Cape Sounion, about one hour drive from Athens, is a popular seaside resort loved by locals and visitors. Sounion is 9 km far from the city of Lavrion, the third biggest port in Attica. The port connects the mainland to the Cyclades. Furthermore, it is close to the mineral museum and to the Theatre of Thorikos, the oldest ancient theater in the country. Cape Sounion was a significant strategic point, whence the city-state of Athens controlled the sea passage to the Aegean Sea and Piraeus, the central port, as well as the Lavrion peninsula. Cape Sounion is noted as the site of ruins of an ancient Greek temple of Poseidon, the god of the sea in classical mythology. The remains are perched on the headland, surrounded on three sides by the sea.
- Route 2 Sounion Poseidon Temple
Situated on the coastal cliffs of Cape Sounion, overlooking the Aegean Sea, the Temple of Poseidon is one of the most evocative sites of ancient Greece and a top visitor attraction. The magnificent monument dates back to 3rd century BC, but today, all that remains is a series of gleaming white marble columns, standing proudly atop the cape. Additional highlights include the remains of a propylaeum and the Temple of Athena, while the real star of the show is the splendid view, which stretches as far as the Cyclades and Peloponnese islands.

Safety in Greece
Greece is generally a very safe place to visit and the majority of risks are similar to other destinations, with pickpockets in the major cities (Athens) and taxi drivers willing to charge you extortionate rates from the airports to the city center. Other less common dangers include dodgy drinking water on many of the Greek islands, the possibility of spiked drinks at international party resorts, and heatstroke on unshaded, sun-drenched Greek beaches. If you board a private boat, always ensure there are adequate life jacket and be vigilant about your belonging when lounging on busy, popular Greek beaches, leaving passport behind in hotel safes. Potentially risky activities aren’t limited to diving and mountain climbing; getting behind the wheel of car in Greece also requires extra defensiveness and caution.
